Hello,

First let me start off by saying that I love sqwebmail : )

I am not saying this is a sqwebmail problem or even a qmail problem. It is
however "a problem" for me and I am asking for help in determining how to
stop this "behavior".

When I have mail in my sqwebmail inbox the mail will vanish in front of my
eyes from the sqwebmail inbox (if I click the folders button) after outlook
express access the maildir. Note that I am not reading, marking read,
deleting, or otherwise manipulating the messages whatsoever while in outlook
express - if a "send and receive" in outlook express occurs the mail will
never show up in the sqwebmail inbox again. This does not happen when I
telnet to 110 and authenticate. The really annoying part is that the mail
is gone forever as far as sqwebmail is concerned and that forces me to go
into outlook express to see the mail I didn't get a chance to read when in
sqwebmail. This is only happeneing to the inbox of sqwebmail, not the other
folders in sqwebmail. I have spent considerable time duplicating it and at
first it was only happening to the "newly created accounts" either created
with vqsignup or qmailadmin but now its happening (after the upgrade to
sqwebmail version 1.2.1) to all of the existing accounts. I ended up
re-installing all qmail-related packages today in an attempt to correct the
problem. Now I am using the following:

autorespond-1.0.0/
daemontools-0.70/
ezmlm-0.53/
qmail-1.03/
qmailadmin-0.40/
sqwebmail-1.2.1/
ucspi-tcp-0.88/
vpopmail-4.9.7/
vqsignup-0.4/

I realize the obvious answer is "don't use outlook express to check the mail
ever again" and that at first glance this appears to be an outlook express
problem and that may be the case but this was not happening with the 1.1.2
version of sqwebmail and it would be nice to find out why it is happening
now to me and if it is happening at all to anyone else. I dont have any
other MUAs laying around to try. If anyone out there has both outlook
express and sqwebmail and is concerned about this issue please contact me
about an e-mail account to further investigate this problem.

I also noticed that activity from sqwebmail's attempts to authenticate are
sometimes not logging but the problem seems to be intermittent. I did the
configure vpopmail with:

[root@mail vpopmail-4.9.7]# ./configure --enable-roaming-users=y
 --enable-logging=p

[root@mail qmail]# tail -f /var/log/mail/info

this always shows activity when outlook express accesss the account, but
sqwebmail is no longer logging to it. However, I have seen sqwebmail access
and password errors logged there previously.

this is from outlook express after I deleted the [EMAIL PROTECTED] and tried
to access the account.

[root@mail /root]# tail -f /var/log/mail/info
Jan 17 10:33:29 mail pop3d: 979756409.599647 tcpserver: ok 23710

Jan 17 10:33:29 mail vpopmail[23711]: vchkpw: No virt found
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:192.168.0.2
Jan 17 10:33:29 mail pop3d: 979756409.612525 tcpserver: end 23710 status 256
Jan 17 10:33:29 mail pop3d: 979756409.613113 tcpserver: status: 0/40

<snip> or even a bad password attempt from outlook express

Jan 17 10:38:51 mail vpopmail[23782]: vchkpw: password fail
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:192.168.0.2 xxx
Jan 17 10:38:51 mail pop3d: 979756731.167629 tcpserver: end 23781 status 256
Jan 17 10:38:51 mail pop3d: 979756731.168265 tcpserver: status: 0/40

The same log doesnt register the failed attempts from sqwebmail like I said
it has logged them there in the past).

I still love sqwebmail.

I am going to stop here, hope for a reply, and provide more info upon
request.

More potentially useful info ...?

[root@mail sqwebmail-1.2.1]# ./configure --enable-https

I hope I was able to explain this sufficently - basically I want the mail to
stay put like it used to as far as sqwebmail is concerned if I happen to
read it from another MUA (as mentioned above merely "sending and receiving"
from outlook express causes the messages to vanish as far as sqwebmail is
concerned). Then of course when I delete mail, or otherwise manipulate it
from another MUA sqwebmail can still "find" it ... lets say if I move a
message from one folder to another.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Rick Up

The problem lies in the fact the when you use Outlook you are checking for
messages. Specifically with POP-3, a protocol designed to be
workstation-oriented. When you pop in, outlook is literally telling the server
to give it the mail, then delete it. however, there is an option in outlook to
leave a copy of messages on the server, in which case you may be ok (don't know
if sqwebmail treats a message differently if it is in cur/ rather than new/).
give it a whirl with any other pop-oriented mua (netscape messenger for
example) and you will see the same thing.

BTW: This is all documented in the sqwebmail information.
