I had the same problem with not being able to login. Always got the
error message. I had to reconfigure using the following. I use
/etc/passwd and /etc/shadow
./configure --with-authpwd --with-authshadow --without-authcustom
--without-authuserdb --without-authpam
after I did that then ran
make
make install-strip
make install-configure
all was well.
