Do you have the authdaemon modules configured? If so, you need to start
authdaemond. Those are the only three possible reason why logins fail:
* incorrect userid and password
* mail account does not exist, or the maildir has incorrect ownership or
permissions
* authdaemon module is being used, and authdaemond is not running
