Thanks to all who responded... for posterity... I needed to link the
sqwebamil.css file into the webmail directory and then all worked well.

Are you sure that sqwebmail.css has been correctly copied to the webmail
folder of your document root? I experienced that before and it was solved by
putting sqwebmail.css in its right place.
