I'm using sqwebmail on 4.3-stable. Works for me.
Here's what I pass to configure. YMMV.
LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/lib CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/include ./configure
--with-userdb=/etc/userdb --enable-cgibindir=/usr/local/www/cgi-bin
--enable-imagedir=/usr/local/www/data/webmail --with-ispell=/usr/local/bin/ispell
--enable-mimetype=/usr/local/etc/apache/mime.types --enable-webpass=no --without-gzip
--without-authdaemon --without-authldap --without-authmysql --without-authcustom
--without-authpam --without-authpwd --with-gdbm-prefix=/usr/local --with-db=gdbm
--enable-maxpurge=30
