I also noticed that:
1. text attachment are saved/displayed without problem in both IE and
mozilla
2. binary attachments [mp3] sent as "BinHex" in calypso (basically, by
sending raw data without encoding it) are transferred correctly if you do:

in mozilla)
left-click on 'display' (attachment) then 'open' -> the file comes down
and can be seen with his application
in IE6)
shift-left click on 'display', then 'open' and chose 'winzip' as your
opening application.

this makes me think that probably this behavior may be caused by the apache
mod_zip, a module which allows faster web transfers via zipping the data.
So, I guess IE doesn't translate correctly the 'zip' (and the page needs to
be opened with winzip or any other .zip handler), but Mozilla does handle
.zip pages correctly (and thus, the correct application is enough).

I haven't tried it without the apache .zip module, I'll see what can be
done.

let me know if you experienced similar problems

cheers
