A more interesting and "smarter solution" is simply to ask the user to "relogin to complete the request". For exemple if the session times out when the user is writing his email, when he presses the "send" button he just needs to login again, and the message is effectively sent, and a new session starts... This is also interesting on a security point of view.
I think it is cleaner that clicking on the "save draft" button or on the "preview" button every 5 minutes to maintain the session. (It is a little bit annoying, but is a good workaround if you were looking for one...)
