Peter,
If you are only using authvchkpw as your authentication method, then please
try running the configure script with this parameters :
./configure \
<your_own_configure_parameters> \
--enable-webpass=vpopmail \
--with-authvchkpw \
--without-authdaemon \
--without-authpam \
--without-authuserdb \
--without-authpwd \
--without-authshadow \
--without-authmysql \
--without-authpgsql \
--without-authldap
And do not start authdaemond
