if we were talking about a 700 megabyte distribution, maybe the difference in compression quality would matter. but we're not. 3.3.7, the last gzipped version i have, was a roughly 7 meg distribution, that compressed down to about 1.5megs with gzip. 3.4.0 is approximately 1.4meg bzipped - how big is the uncompressed distribution, 8 megs? is the difference in compression really worth it? particularly today, when a T1 is considered small-potatoes, and a 120gig disk is no great shakes? seems we've got a silly regression here. at worst though, we have fewer choices - i guess that's what i bristle at most.
but i'm beating a dead horse, i presume, so i'll shut up and take my punishment.
