Ok, so from what you wrote it sounded like if I used the second patch maybe
I wouldn't need to get automake. (This sounded like a good thing since I
had already spent 3 hours installing things so far, since the 20030215
version was distributed in a bz2 file which I had never heard of, and then
the freebsd ports website was apparently down ... blah blah.)
In any case I finally installed bzip and so was able to install 20030215 and
confirm that it worked. Then I made a cp -R copy of the 20030215 source
tree, cd'd to that directory and then for the first time in my life ran
"patch", which I did as follows
patch <sqwebmail-3.5.0.20030215-automake.patch
and which resulted in the following output
Hmm... Looks like a unified diff to me...
