Hi. I'm a user of SqWebMail in Japan.
Japanese multibyte characters (Hanzi, Hiragana, Katakana
etc.) are usually shown as 1 character with 'full' width (occupies
2 columns). Truncating string containing multibyte (and also singlebyte) characters with its byte-position can break multibyte characters.
The same problems will occur in Chinese (Hanzi etc.) and Korean (Hangul, Hanzi etc.) strings.
Attached patches will solve this problem on folder content listings.
The replacement utf8_() functions look messy. I see what you're trying to do and I will implement it a little bit differently.
