The recent thread "customizing sqwebmail, nwe look" [sic] has greatly
intrigued me.
I had already been planning to work through some of the issues
mentioned in there about removing all HTML-controlled style information
(e.g. rounded corners, layout tables, etc.) in favor of using
completely CSS-controlled style... as well as hopefully working on some
template improvements as well for such things as ease of
internationalization, etc.
However, I haven't done any work on the subject because Sam seemed
"almost ready, but not quite" to leave behind the design in question,
which is workable in both new and old browsers. (And because I bothered
him so much earlier this year about HTML cleanup changes. :) His
preference (while I was talking to him about those changes) seemed to
be to hold off on gutting the "style support" for the older browsers
for a while longer.
I can understand that to some degree, because (inexplicable as it is!)
some people do still use (worthless, IMO) browsers such as Netscape 4.x
in their everyday routine.
However, this recent thread indicates that at least a couple of you
here are very passionate about moving forward on some of these changes.
Therefore... My questions are for the rest of you:
A) Would you choose to leave behind the older non-CSS conforming
browsers in moving forward on a more customizable interface? --
SqWebMail is actually already quite customizable by updating the
sqwebmail.css file. But it's not enough for me... how about you? Would
you leave behind Netscape 4 and the like (and things like hard-coded
rounded corners) for a purer CSS design?
B) How important are additional template options for
internationalization to you?
C) What are the features of the riwos project which you would *most*
like to see implemented in the main sqwebmail tree? I.e. combined
folder list and message list views, or sounds (ick!), or anything else
you see as being a feature.
D) Can you prioritize these (and any other comments you have) and email
them to me -- off list preferably, so as not to tie up everyone's inbox
-- so that I can get a feeling of what most people would like to see?
If everyone (or at least a large enough number of you) seems ready for
some of these changes, I'd be willing to put some time into making
relevant patches to submit to Sam for inclusion in the source tree.
I had planned on doing so anyway... at some point. But I took up so
much of Sam's time earlier this year with the HTML cleanup stuff, that
I figured I'd wait it out a bit before submitting any other changes.
However, if most people here are ready for it, I'm ready to put some
time into at least some of these issues, I think.
Please email me off list during the next couple of days, if you'd like
to respond to this informal "poll" of mine, and I'll take a look at the
results during the week. Thank you in advance for your input.
