Because it's a huge security problem. In particular, spammers can use the
fact that you have accessed these remote images as a way of tracking that
you have opened the mail - this in turn means that you have confirmed your
E-mail address, and will receive much more spam.

The file sqwebmail/SECURITY in the source tarball explains it, see "Browser
Security - HTML"

I think you should be able to click on the link to see the image, if you
really want to see it.
