I figured it out.
 
The clock on the nfs server which hosted /usr/local/vpopmail/domains/ was 30 minutes behind the webserver which ran the sqwebmail cgi binary... this resulted in an immediate logout/timeout upon a successful login.

Once i synchronized the clocks the error disappeared!

That was a tricky one - only took 7 hours for me to figure out what it was!!
