Actually the EXTRA_DEBUG define was supposed to be just for troubleshooting
purposes, some aborts there were added in the early phase to get a core file
and understand better what happened by investigating it with gdb. Somehow it
got enabled for mode debug, which had the purpose of compiling with debugging
symbols. Probably we need to review the code enabled by EXTRA_DEBUG and see
which is actually still needed.
I will leave this issue open for few more days and if nothing new pops up, I
will close it. Can be reopened lately if needed.
