It could be due to latest ruby, as it is mentioned that previous version was ok.
Anyhow, the corefile from where you took the backtrace is written during the
shutdown, this one can be a side effect of the one happening at runtime,
overwriting it.
Enable core dump per pid and reproduce the issue again. You should get at least
two core files if there is a runtime issue. Get the gdb backtraces from all the
core files you get.
