Something seems to be strange with libmysqlclient and libssl on ubuntu 16.04,
especially after latest security updates. I spent a bit of time and could track
it down, not being familiar with its code. At the end, the system I
troubleshooted was upgraded to a newer Ubuntu. Libssl was in a rather fluid
state during past few years, between 1.0 and 1.1 releases, then libmysqlclient
also was sometimes compiled with another ssl lib. New versions of distros
shifted to mariadb, which doesn't seem to expose any similar issue.
