I didn't squash the two commits to the same file as the first is introducing
optional behavior and the second is just for changing the default behavior - so
I thought it makes sense to see them separately, in case you want to drop the
second one. If you prefer that I squash these - just let me know.
This PR is for the main branch. I'm interested in porting it back to at least
5.7 (that I still use) - should I do that after (if) this PR is merged?
