Iirc, linking statically with libz was added because it didn't work otherwise
on some old distro. Not sure if there is a way to detect if libz would be
require or not, but of works fine on latest two stable Debian
(12/13)/Ubuntu(22.04. 24.04) distros without linking statically to it, the it
can be removed (or switch to linking against the dynamic libz.so).
