You can start kamailio from prompt directly - of course logged as root: kamailio {parameters - including cfg file} If you are using ubuntu - it is more tricky - first you should create root user, or may be you can start with: sudo kamailio {parameters} I never started kamailio using kamctrl. I am starting it through little modified init script.
