Characterized (by Action)
Anguttara Nikaya 3.2, Kandarayana Sutta
Commentary: The Lord Buddha explains how to differentiate between a fool and a
wise person in accordance with the Dhamma. Until one attains Nibbana, one is
liable to act like a fool from time to time but he wise person knows to
minimize this to an absolute minimum. One can consider oneself and others as
either acting wisely or as acting foolishly. Whoever acts wisely at most times
can be considered a wise person and whoever acts foolishly most of the time can
be considered a foolish person.

"Monks, a fool is characterized by his/her actions. A wise person is
characterized by his/her actions. It is through the activities of one's life
that one's discernment shines.

Explanation: The Lord Buddha says that it is through their actions a fool and
a wise person can be identified.

"A person endowed with three things is to be recognized as a fool. Which three?
Bodily misconduct, verbal misconduct, mental misconduct. A person endowed with
these three things is to be recognized as a fool.

Explanation: The Lord Buddha says that a fool can be recognized through their
negative bodily actions, negative speech and negative thinking.

"A person endowed with three things is to be recognized as a wise person. Which
three? Good bodily conduct, good verbal conduct, good mental conduct. A person
endowed with these three things is to be recognized as a wise person.

Explanation: The Lord Buddha says that a wise person can be recognized through
their positive bodily actions, positive speech and positive thinking.

"Thus, monks, you should train yourselves: 'We will avoid the three things
that, endowed with which, one is to be recognized as a fool. We will undertake
& maintain the three things that, endowed with which, one is to be recognized
as a wise person.' That's how you should train yourselves."

Explanation: The Lord Buddha advises the monks to train themselves to act in a
way in which one would be recognized as a wise person and not as a fool - that
is by avoiding all negative bodily actions, negative speech and negative
thinking and by developing positive bodily actions, positive speech and
positive thinking.
