The Jamiat-Ulema-e-Hind issued a fatwa (a decree), asking its community
members not to sing the song 'Vande Mataram'. Two days on, and the
incident has snowballed into a political row. While the Hindu group VHP
has come down heavily on the diktat, other politicians and public
figures have had they say too. Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar has
played down the issue, saying that the controversy is old and obsolete.

But could not the controversy have been avoided? In a multi-ethnic and
multi-cultural nation as ours, can we not agree to respect a few
national symbols? Or does being called a secular nation mean making
decisions based on religion?
