*Voice of a nation...* *‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’* * *[image: http://joedale.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/07/25/girl_walking_with_india_flag_2.gif][image: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jz6MAv72hK0/Szhjg9PurbI/AAAAAAAAB7w/kUvCKyK_3nY/s400/doordarshan.jpg][image: http://joedale.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/07/25/girl_walking_with_india_flag_2.gif]
*Time was when Doordarshan was the only channel available on television sets in India. Time was when nobody complained of “nothing interesting to watch” even as they were served the staple news bulletins, serials and cultural programmes. Time was when one song comprising all the regional languages of the country was hummed and strummed in every nook and cranny. Time was when ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ *[image: http://www.parichowk.com/Ganraj-children-group-singers.JPG] * with a bandwagon of super stars from tinselville, arts and sports from every state in India, walked straight into the hearts of millions. The song created by the Lok Seva Sanchar Parishad in 1988 written by Piyush Pandey and composed by Louis Banks and P Vaidyanathan kindled patriotism in hearts young and old. *[image: http://www.andhrafolks.net/nostalgia/milesur.jpg] *It was six minutes of bliss that spread the message of unity in diversity through faces known and unknown. An eye opener to the cultural background of the states of India, the song comes back in a new avatar as ‘Phir Mile Sur’ 22 years later starring the popular faces of the day. But many wonder if it will recreate the charm of the original song. *[image: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/QxJO2aVQF1M/0.jpg] *“Can anyone from our generation forget the song easily ? ” ** “The more I heard it, the more I fell in love with it. Listening to the song now is a walk back in time to the good old days of the past,”** Patriotic songs that grew as popular in that time were few. The song arrived at the right time and instilled patriotism in a whole generation with a horde of stars. ** “It’s been long since I watched the video of the song but how well I remember a young Kamal Hassan walking by the seashore!” ** “Not to forget the divine voice of Balamurali Krishna. It was a one of a kind song. I am not sure if the second part will be as delightful because ‘Mile Sur...’ brings with it a treasure trove of memories of the bygone era which the new one might not give us.” There’s only one person from the 1988 song who’ll feature in the 2010 version of it - Amitabh Bachchan. This time, it’s a family affair for him with son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya too rubbing shoulders with a host of new age stars from different walks of life. ** “A song like this is the need of the hour when the values of patriotism, harmony and national integration need to be reinstilled in young Indians. It’ll be great if television channels besides Doordarshan and FM radios start telecasting the song at a crucial juncture like this when the threat of terrorism is looming large over the nation. It’ll also go a long way in instilling communal harmony,” ** *[image: http://harshad.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/india_flag_background.jpg] *Mile sur mera tumharaa, Thoo sur bane hamaraa.... sur kee nadhiyaan har disha se behkee saagar mein milee.
