*Patil's husband loses land case *

*A court in western India has ordered the name of President Pratibha Patil's
husband to be deleted from the ownership papers of disputed land.*

The order was in response to a petition by a farmer alleging that Devisingh
Shekhawat had fraudulently had his name included in the ownership title.

The names of five other relatives must also be struck off the title deeds.

Mr Shekhawat has denied wrongdoing, saying there was a mistake in measuring
the land in Maharashtra state.

"The land officers measured the land in a wrong manner and showed it as ours
when my father bought it," he was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times
newspaper.

Local farmer, Kishore Bansod, who filed the petition, alleged that Mr
Shekhawat and his relatives had fraudulently added their names to the
ownership papers of a 3.2 acre (1.3 hectare) site he had refused to sell
them.

"The Shekhawats own almost 200 acres in the village and were interested in
owning this land too," Mr Bansod's lawyer, Sunil Gajbhiye, was quoted as
saying.

"My client wasn't willing to sell the land. So the Shekhawats got it
fraudulently transferred in their names."
