True enough.  However except for rare exceptions FTP has been difficult
to use programmatically anyway....

As I understand it there's no need to use FTP with Emacs -- you should
be able to use scp as an rcp replacement, and from what I've been told
(and what I've read in various forums), Emacs will be quite happy with
it (I don't use ange-ftp -- it rather annoys me far too much! ;-).
