Make sure that your PATH include /usr/ccs/bin
My path includes the following, and works very well:

PATH="/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/ucb:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/openwin/bin:/sbin:/usr/local/sbin"

'nm' is used to analyze library files or some such, it's how configure
figures out a lot of things.
