bad modes for authorized_keys

Hi I am not able to authenticate via RSA on one of my BSDI 4.1 machines
running ssh 1.2.27.  The error I get in the log is:

sshd1[18718]: log: Rsa authentication refused for slade: bad modes for
/usr/home/slade/.ssh/authorized_keys

It does let me authenticate via password.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
