If you want more useful information, recompile the client side ssh with
--enable-debug

Did you apply the Sami Lehtinen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> patch before you compiled the
source?  What is in /.ssh2/identification?  We had hostbased
authentication problems before applying this patch.  I can send the patch to 
you if you like or you can also check http://www.ssh.com for the patch.
