<RH6.2>

it looks like you installed from tarball (as did i - the rehat
offered rpm's are out of date last i checked)

upgrade to make sure your version is 2.1.1p1
in the contrib/redhat directory there are a few essentials
for getting your system to work under RH6.2:

(check these paths- i'm typing them from memory)
cp contrib/redhat/sshd.init /etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd
cp contrib/redhat/sshd.pam /etc/pam.d/sshd
(its very important that they are namechanged as such)

(add your sshd service )
su -c 'chkconfig add sshd'

generate a host key, its in the documentation on how to do it
make sure it is in the correct path location. (/usr/local/etc ?)

make sure your sshd_config is properly done as well. reading through
and understanding *each* line is a prereq to serving it i think...

start your sshd service, and try to login from the loopback interface.
under a fresh install of rh6.2 and openssl+openssh it does work.
