All of you had good suggestions and I thank you all for the time you took to
answer my questions. But this was the clincher.

I went back to the installation instructions on the website and now I see
the paragraph I glossed over:

If you are using PAM, you will need to manually install a PAM control file
as /etc/pam.d/sshd (or wherever your system prefers to keep them). A generic
PAM configuration is included as contrib/sshd.pam.generic, you may need to
edit it before using it on your system. If you are using a recent version of
Redhat Linux, the config file in contrib/redhat/sshd.pam should be more
useful. 

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT. I am a bum. I always pride myself on reading the manuals
thoroughly and I completely missed that part. My client logged in perfectly
and I'm up and running! Thanks!
