It's not an issue for a terminal session, but speed can be a problem for file transfers on a 100 Mbps network. I find ftp to be 10 times faster than SSH between PC's and unix. There's been some recent discussion about performance on this list. The bottom line seemed to be that there are some inefficiencies in ssh which may be fixed in a future release. Speed might also be a factor for X-windows sessions, but I'm not using X much these days.
