Building on Solaris8

Actually I'm just getting started and running ./configure (no options).
Everything comes to a halt with the following message: "checking whether byte
ordering is bigendian... configure: error: Cannot cross-compile without
BYTE_ORDER set in sys/param.h.".  Has anybody seen this?  Better yet can anybody
point me to instructions for compiling ssh on solaris8?
