password authentication problems

ssh community,
I recently installed version 2.9 on my linux box and started up the daemon. When I now 
try and log into the machine, my password cannot be recognized for some reason (even 
when the password is correct, I'm treated just as if I entered an incorrect one). If 
any one can offer any insight as to how to solve this problem, or where to look, I'd 
be much appreciative. Thank you
