Finally got it working, I had the openssl installed from a depot file, I
removed this and installed using
the source available at www.openssl.com, this resovled the issue.

This already gives the necessary information: check out config.log, it
does contain the reason for the problem. Without this information, nobody
will be able to tell you what is going wrong.
