Get yourself a LED inspection light - mine has a handle about 5" long with a rotary on/off switch at one end, and about 1/4" diameter; on the other end is a 5" long flexible/bendy bit the looks like it's wrapped with a spring on the outside and ending with a bare, white LED. It will fit through the safety valve bushing on my boiler, illuminating the interior. Remove fittings from the boiler end (as required) to give you a view of the inside. The part that's hard to see is the end you're looking through.
