There might be something to that. According to what I have read,
much of which is accounts of galvanic corrosion in marine applications,
where it can be very aggressive and the most common remedy is the use of
sacrificial zinc anodes, they also occasionally state that other insulators
or dialectrics, such as grease, can be somewhat effective. It may very
well be that an accumulation of copper oxide or oil on exposed surfaces
retards the action in some cases and not in others where less or no oil or
oxide is present.
