Hello Walt and Clark,
Check this web site:
http://www.southernsteamtrains.com/misc/steam-oil-hwade.htm
At this site our friend Harry Wade dished out the straight scoop on steam
cylinder oils.
It IS still made and it is the real thing. Whatever salesmen you spoke to
were up to....I don't know, possibly they just don't know their own
business, or were confused when you mentioned 600W and did not use the
current ISO 460 designation, but Mobile and Chevron both still manufacture
the same steam cylinder oil that has been available for 100 years. I have no
information on the oil that Clark mentions, but I suspect that the
Supplier he is buying his steam cylinder oil from, but I suspect he is just
buying the stuff from the large oil companies and repackaging it to sell at
a higher price.
You can buy smaller quantities of this same oil from antique car supply
companies, as steam cylinder oil is used for the read end differential gear
housing on Model T Ford cars!
The last steam cylinder oil that I bought was Texaco Vanguard 460, which I
ordered through a local lubricants distributor. I purchased a five gallon
pail, but at that time I still owned a Model T and it used a quantity that
made the five gallon pail economical. I would guess that several steamers
pooling their orders could easily split a five gallon pail.
But please read Harry's dissertation, it is well researched and the
definitive source of information on true steam cylinder oils.
