I have seen the local short line do flying switch operations in Springfield, Oregon (on a map you will see Eugene, Oregon most likely). The small diesel engine from a stop accelerated rapidly then the correct coupler was opened and the engine with some cars passed the switch. The moving three cars now disconnected moved slower and a widening gap opened allowing the switchman to throw the switch after the engine pulled section passed, forcing the three free rolling tank cars into the siding. The engine then reversed after the switch was set for the mainline again and collected the tail end of the train (approximated 8 cars) that was left behind at the start of the operation.
