Steam oil contains something besides just petroleum oils because the oil
will be washed off cylinder walls, pistons etc by steam and hot condensate. The
additives are usually referred to as "tallow" although I doubt is actual
tallow is now used. But, some kind of not petroleum product that will stay in
place. Different steam oils are made for saturated and for superheated steam.
When I worked in power plants one of our consultants was a "lubrication
engineer" and when I asked him about steam oil for low pressure reciprocating
engines he gave me a five gallon can that I am still using. I am pretty
stingy
with the steam oil and use ordinary machine oil on wheels, rods etc and save
the "good stuff" for the cylinder lubricator only.
