Just to close the loop for the archives, here is the Ubuntu bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sssd/+bug/1664566
In the meantime, the workaround is to create a symlink
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/krb5/plugins/libkrb5 pointing to krb5.
