Blatant self-promotion follows:

The problem basically boils down to there being a window during the
install process where libc is broken, and freebsd-update needs to exec
programs that depend on libc working to continue proceeding.

I've not tested it, but it seems likely that since
sysutils/freebsd-rustdate doesn't need to exec external programs
during the install process, it should be able to run through OK, so
could serve as a workaround.
