Before reinstallation for the not-zroot zpools i do :
zpool export poolname
After a reinstalltion for the not-zroot zpools i usually do :
zpool import -f poolname
zpool upgrade poolname
I keep backups of all relevant system files from /etc & /boot on
the not-zroot zpools
so the files can be conviniently reinstalled.

No data loss. Some hair loss before realizing it wasn't wiped out (the
top level empty /tank)
Maybe more fs than stable, but asking here anyway. I asked there too
without a crosspoint.
