Just to give an update, executive summary: Move along people, there's
nothing to see here.

This was reproducible but went away when I played with the fan control
settings in the BIOS. Setting was already to "off" (or "fixed" OWTTE)
but changing the speed from 50% to 100% somehow seemed to do the
trick. Reverting that change did not cause the problem to re-appear.
This is not as silly as it seems, fan control on these boards is known
to cause trouble.

This was not reproducible.

Seems to be fine now and this is probably somewhere deep in
i915/KMS/xrandr/whatever. Will check further when time permits but it
proably won't.
