I use
export MAVEN_OPTS="-Xmx1024m -XX:MaxPermSize=256M
and this works fine for me. I will also update the readme accordingly.
Thx for bringing that to our attention!
The tip of Dave to use the "-DskipTests" options is a good one as it
typically wild cut the build time in half.
