We actually do both - for contacts its for automated translation on sending and per message for automated translation on receive

No but Boyd seemed to be looking for a way to associate language(s) with contacts rather than necessarily per message, and I would have thought that disco would be the way to allow you to find out the languages of a particular contact don't you think?
