Thanks Marcus and Matthew, I read some XEPs, but somehow overlooked the one I was looking for. I'm going to check out the current implementations and look further into it :-)

Even better, it is already implemented out in the wild. I use Gajim
which supports it, iChat supports it. I *think* Psi supports it,
possibly only in SVN, I'm not sure. There are quite likely others
besides, just I don't know them.

libpurple (Pidgin, Finch, and Adium) supports it too :) (it's called
"Bonjour"). Though the protocol plugin doesn't support all features of
the ordinary XMPP plugin AFAIK.
