I personally turn off xhtml-im as I have no way to just turn off styling (it's annoying to let others configure my fonts and colors, especially if it doesn't really work). If you don't forbid semantics, I could turn off the styling and keep the seemantic part (styled to my own preferences). And... keeping the semantic markup doesn't do any harm to users that don't know about it. They'll just configure the fonts and colors, that I don't care about (and I won't see).
