Some of these services have native XMPP functionality, some run bots
that you can "chat" with over XMPP (e.g., [email protected]), and others
offer no XMPP functionality at all so you need to gateway. I can't claim
to have studied the matter in depth, but AFAIK Laconi.ca instances use
the bot approach. Twitter famously turned off its XMPP support a while
back so I suppose true gateways would be needed for that. I am not sure
about the others.
