Amen. And I'll make the observation that all your above considerations
took into account only time passed, and not the number of stanzas
since the last ack.

While I agree that there are numerous other factors involved (not
least of all the network) I think the unacked stanza count should be
switched for a time-based algorithm. Perhaps something along the lines
of the BOSH timeout handshake (C: I want to go this long, S: I want to
go this long, both use smallest).
