Sorry missed that! I always skip to the protocol section. I think it's a good idea: unlike Peter I do get annoyed by the "someones writing something" message that appears in most IM clients but that's because I am more impatient and not as stress free as Peter.
However, I believe that you already said that you ran into problems with gtalk dropping stanzas, probably due to rate limiting which is pretty common. I'm just thinking that an out-of-band (direct connect) solution might work better here.
